Why Everyday Theologian?

When I was twenty years old, I had a crisis of faith. I grew up attending a church but still desired to do as I pleased. My husband, Colby, and I were married for one year and divorced after infidelity on my part. I remember racking my brain with questions.

 “How did I get here?!”

I went to church every time the door was open…” This is where religion in God and a relationship with God come into the picture. Just because I attended church didn’t make me a Christian. I’ve heard the analogy, “standing in a garage doesn’t make you are car…” I think that principle applied to my life.

You may be wondering why I am starting the first blog off with such a somber story… I want to make one thing clear before we start this journey together. I am a human. I have sinned and I am far from perfect. During our time together, the last thing I would want is for you to think more highly of me than you should. This entire platform is to glorify God and help you to dive into your own relationship with Him. You do not need my firsthand revelations or anyone else’s for that matter. You need firsthand revelation through reading scripture on your own. I am just a willing (but broken) vessel that God is so kind to work through.

Friends, please do not come to our weekly podcasts hoping to find the answers to life’s biggest questions. Rather, theology is “faith seeking understanding”. We do not first try to make sense of our questions to then find faith in Christ. It’s the opposite. We will wrestle with theology together, but we are building on the faith God has already given us. We have faith through grace. This is not by our own efforts but a GIFT from God (Ephesians 2:8).

Jumping back into the story… After going through the divorce and living in such a chaos. I met God there. You see, God is not far from us. Wherever you are right now, mess and all, He desires to be with you. There is hope. “If we confess with our mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead we will be saved.” Romans 10:9.

That is where my new life began.

Through God’s mercy he restored my married to Colby. We now have two children, Sophie, and Samuel. My love for the Bible has landed me in multipe classrooms. I am a student at Dallas Theological Seminary. I major in Biblical and Theological studies. I know studying the Bible can be nerve racking. You may not know where to start with it. Don’t let the genealogies and the words you can’t pronounce scare you. Plus, we’ve all been there. There is a purpose in the text.

At Everyday Theologian, we believe that everyone can and should know why they believe what they believe. The culture around us tries to tell us that truth is subjective. Maybe you’ve heard someone make the statement, “this is MY truth.” The issue with this is truth is objective. It doesn’t change. I can wish that the sky was green but that doesn’t change the sky being blue. We learn what truth is through examining the Bible. Since we believe God is the creator of all things, including us, we do not get to tell Him what truth is. Instead, we deny our desires to obey what He tells us. We will give you multiple tools to place in your toolbox that points you toward loving God and loving others in a deeper way.

Why the name, “Everyday Theologian?” I’m glad you asked! Have you ever had a conversation about God? Or have you ever thought something about God? If you answered “yes” to one of those questions, you are a theologian! Maybe you haven't viewed yourself in that light, but "theology" is simply the term we use to summarizes our thoughts about God and how we apply those thoughts to life. Even those who do not believe in God have formed a theology of Him. The issue is not if we are theologians, the issue is are we accurate theologians.

How do we make sure we are accurate theologians? As Christians, we will use the Bible as our textbook. With that said, we believed God is not a subject to be studied, like reading or writing. Rather, God is the Creator of all things (Col 1:16). As part of His creation, we are only capable of learning what He has revealed to us. Thankfully, God has revealed Himself through Scripture (2 Tim 3:16), His Son (John 1:14) and the world (Romans 1:20). What a gift that He is not far from us and desires that we know Him. God has given us multiple ways to know Him, but just like any healthy relationship, we must put in the time to cultivate it.

At Everyday Theologian, you can expect to see weekly, thought-provoking podcasts and blogs, and in person courses on multiple theological and biblical topics fun merchandise and more.

Let’s equip ourselves to be ready to give an answer for the hope that we have. See you next week as we cover core doctrine. (1 Peter 3:15).
